Planning Your Expedition (Best Times, Gear and Amenities)
While harvesting for clams, mussels and oysters at Quilcene Bay Tidelands is a year-round pursuit, low tides are key to success. Clams are easiest to find when the vast mudflats are exposed. Check the tide schedule before you set your date and time.
Pro Tip: Aim for tides lower than -1.5 feet for optimal clamming conditions.
The types of shellfish that are most common include:
- Manilla Clams
- Native Littleneck Clams
- Eastern Softshell Clams
- Oysters (Note: Oysters must be schucked and shells left in the mudflats.)
Facilities:
- Parking (limited – be patient, spots open up frequently).
- Restroom (but no trash receptacles – plan to pack out all garbage).
- Additional amenities can be found at Herb Beck Marina at the end of Linger Longer Road.
Gear Up for Discovery (Equipment Needed)
To ensure a smooth clamming adventure, pack these essentials:
- Shellfish License: Everyone 15 and older requires a Washington Shellfish and Seaweed License (annual – ~$15). Obtain yours at WDFW Licenses. Click Here.
- Clamming Tool: A clamming shovel or rake is ideal for efficiently digging. A garden rake can work in a pinch.
- Clam Gauge: Essential to ensure your clams meet the minimum size limit of 1.5 inches.
- Rubber Gloves (optional): Protect your hands while digging.
- Bucket (3-5 gallons): To collect your bounty!
- Dress Appropriately: Check the weather beforehand. Rubber boots are helpful but not an absolute. Swim gear for the kids -- they will get wet and muddy.
- Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, especially during summer months.
- Snacks & Drinks: Keep your crew energized throughout your expedition.
Tips for Families
Clam digging at Quilcene Bay Tidelands is a fun and educational activity for the whole family. Here are some tips to ensure a memorable experience:
- Check Health Information: Before heading to the beach, please also check the Department of Health (DOH) information related to the health of the shellfish. Click Here
- Safety First: Do not try to access the beach from the northern parking lot (near the restroom). The mud in the creek channel is extremely sticky and hazardous.
- Respect Private Property: Private shellfish farms are adjacent to public tidelands in Quilcene Bay. Please do not trespass on private property.
- Explore Outer Units: The Northwest, Southwest, and Northeast units are a longer walk, but worth it for superior clam digging.
